J.R.’s Club Comment & Sunday Selections

7 June 2026

Our great race , The Duke of Edinburgh Silver Collar is upon us again this Sunday at the Sports Bowl, and couple that with the Group One Waterloo Cup Final and a host of other feature races , then we are in for an excellent day’s racing.

The weather outlook looks favourable , with Sunday becoming fine , after a bit of early weekend rain. It may be a little cooler , but the Sports bowl is well undercover , so join us from 12.30pm for all the action.

Star bets registrations were strong for the next round, and you can still register early on this Sunday , to take part. Remember the competition   lasts until 19th July 2026.

Last weeks Last Man Standing Prize was collected by a happy team .We were asked if there could be another Last Man Standing on Collar day and given the quality of the fields , and the support shown by the Manukau faithful , the club have agreed and a further $500 prize will be on offer , so get those teams  arranged.

A quality  matching toaster and kettle set is up for grabs on R10 , the Waterloo Cup Final. Just complete the entry form and place in the entry box. Prior to R9 we will draw 8  entries out , and each will be assigned a dog. The person that is assigned the winning dog , takes home this very practical prize. All entries dawn out  and assigned a runner will receive a $10 betting voucher.

Please  take note , the meeting on July 12th at Manukau may well have an early start (11.00am) , if there are 5 race meetings domestically , as scheduled presently.

Now lets have a look at these fields and try and sort out a winner or three.

R1 No3 Hunter Lou can be very hard to beat here, and we will hear the roar if he gets up from afar. No7 Portland Avatar prefers this circuit and can run a race.

R2 Tricky go here. Perhaps No5 Sunrise Michelle  and No6 Waerenga Ritchie, but there a  few chances here.

R3 Going for the fresh runner , No4 Main Character , but if his litter brother, No3 Midnight Rex jumps as well as he has being doing at Cambridge , then the result may well be different.

R4 Another tricky contest. If No5 Alpine Jewel leads , then she may be hard to catch. No6 Altruism scored nicely at Cambridge Thursday and can go well again today.

R5 No5 Madam Phaedra for me here. No2 Portland Fleet will be there with an even jump.

R6 No7 Simek , with all the track experience , for me. No3 Bay Flyer returns to Manukau and can be right there.

R7 Quality Hi Fi Allegro final. My old mate , No7 Portland Mark, richly deserves a feature win, and can get that here. No3 You Turn was excellent fresh last week, but heaps of chances in this one.

R8 The great race , The Silver Collar final. The wonderful stayer , No7 Chief Dribble will be the hot favourite, but I am leaning to No5 Adobe Vidal, his kennelmate , who looked extra strong last week. Either would be worthy winner , as would any other runner that upset the pair.

R9 Another tricky affair , with a lot of newcomers to Manukau, No4 Jilliby Eaton brings good form here, but No5 Cocoon the Food and No8 Opawa Scarlet have the track experience.

R10. What a very good even field for the Waterloo Cup final. The young up and comer, No5 Portland Fonzie was good in his heat  win and will improve further. No6 Opawa Postman has winning track form , but there are numerous chances here.

R11 No5 Portland Chica is drawn to get a clear run early and she will need to , as No7 Bigtime Leena can set up a merry tune in front.

R12 No7 Portland Abigail impressed winning fresh last week. No2 Epic Wildman is the danger.
